This week we’ve been preparing for a new group of bright young pupils joining us in September from primary schools within and beyond the Trust. Moving up to secondary school is an exciting time, filled with the opportunity to make new friends, learn new skills and enjoy new experiences. It also brings with it a significant change for each child and their family and given the unique nature of each of our children, it’s to be expected that parents want to understand how the new school plans to successfully support their child’s continuing education.

To help with this we welcomed a number of pupils and their families into school on Thursday for our Year 6 Transition Meetings. It was an opportunity for us to provide lots of information about New Bridge School and how we operate, explain how the day runs, what each child can expect when they join us in September and answer any questions parents had. We were really pleased with how many parents were able to attend as it gives us the chance to respond to the individual queries of each parent and ensure everyone leaves reassured that their questions have been answered. For those of you who weren’t able to make it please do contact school so we can arrange an opportunity to update you with the relevant information and next steps regarding your child’s transition. In the meantime we’ll be welcoming all the Year 6 pupils into school again during the rest of the term for a series of visits in which they’ll be able to familiarise themselves with the school and our staff team, and participate in some fun activities and lessons around school. We look forward to seeing you all soon.

Our Year 7 pupils thoroughly enjoyed the annual visit to the Royal Armouries in Leeds on Thursday. They are busy writing up their account of the day which we will bring you next week but we thought you might like to have a quick look at what they got up to while you’re waiting – despite the rain, it was apparently the “best school day ever..”

As promised last week, we have an update from Mr Fieldhouse..

It is Spring in Science and as such the pond in the sensory garden is teeming with life. The frog spawn that was found in the pond hatched and the tadpoles are swimming freely about. The pupils of New Bridge have taken advantage of this to learn about the life cycle of frogs. We have captured some tadpoles and carefully placed them under a microscope. Using the new iPad and interactive screen, in combination with a microscope, we have seen the heart beating and their razor sharp teeth which they use for eating the plants and each other..

The pupils then returned the tadpoles safely back to their home. Over the following weeks we are going to follow the metamorphosis of our pond guests into frogs when we hope to help them get safely into the wild.

Yet more of our pupils have successfully completed their DofE practice expedition. This time it was our Silver group packing their rucksacks and they were very relieved to find the weather was on their side for a change. You can find out all the details in Mr Taylor’s report here.

Next week will see even more adventures, as another determined DofE group tackle their expedition and our Year 8 pupils head off on their eagerly awaited residential to Disneyland Paris. I’m not sure who’s more excited about Disneyland – the Year 8s or Mr Quinn!
