Miss Wright, our Year 13 Pastoral Lead, tells us more about this year’s adventure..

WOW, what an AMAZING week the Year 13s have had on their residential at the Calvert Trust in the Lake District! Firstly, I need to say how lucky we have been to get such fantastic weather, it certainly helped to make it such a good week.

We set off on Monday morning, everyone was very excited. After a pleasant journey we arrived at Calvert. It didn’t take long to get our luggage off the coach as there was an abundance of willing helpers who quickly transported all the bags, cases and equipment (and we don’t travel light!) to the rooms. We got into our groups and met the Calvert staff who were leading our activities. They gave us our kit (waterproofs and wellies) and explained what was going to happen that week. It was then time for tea. The food is delicious at Calvert and there is plenty of choice.

Monday evening and the more adventurous amongst us went on a night walk while some took the opportunity to relax and unwind.

For the next three days our young people canoed and braved the zip wire and high ropes. They cycled, ghyll scrambled, went down a mine, brushed and rode horses, drove a pony and trap. They lit fires to toast marshmallows, went swimming and even visited Keswick. Have a look..

The great thing about Calvert is that it is inclusive and all the young people get to have a go at the activities. It is fantastic to watch as they challenge themselves to go outside their comfort zones and then see the sense of achievement as they accomplish the activity. The zip wire was the perfect example of this..

As the week goes on, these young people become more independent, they support and encourage each other during the activities and they begin to help each other at social times.

Friday came around very quickly and it was time to head off back to the Learning Centre. Again, there were plenty of volunteers to load up the coach and we were on our way in record time with lots of tired but happy young people.

I would like to thank all the staff and students on this year’s residential. It has been brilliant! We have taken part in lots of exciting and challenging activities and we have made some wonderful memories.
