This week saw the first meeting of the Learning Centre student Trilby TV group. Here’s a report from Mrs Joubert..

“Exciting times …… Trilby started this week and will meet every Wednesday at 12:20 in the ICT room –  our small group comprises of Nathan W., Cherrie, Kyle, Jacob and Ryan.

All the students are working hard at creating their own movie/presentation to be put on all the TVs at the Learning Centre.  A big massive thank you for your first week, it’s a lot to take in but I know we have a brilliant, confident group that will provide the necessary information on all kinds of events going on at the Learning Centre. Keep watching for news, forthcoming events and general pics of all our students working hard.”

Should anybody wish to join, please see Mrs Joubert.

Mr Barker has an update on our Parents Group:

Our next professionals meeting for the Learning Centre Parents Group is with Kevin Howarth at 2pm on Monday 13th May at the Learning Centre. Kevin is the Team manager of Oldham’s Adult Learning Difficulty and Autism team. He will be talking about transitions from Children’s to Adult Services and budgets, amongst other things.

Following that, we will have our next Parents Group meeting on Monday 10th June at 2pm at the Learning Centre.

As promised, I’m delighted to give you the amounts raised to date at last week’s Comic Relief day.

The Nurture Group and food industry groups raised £17.50 by selling some lovely cakes. Well done also to Maryam, Omar, Callum Mc W, Cherrie, Josh and Nathan W. who all raised money by completing a full day’s ‘sponsored silence’ and/or ‘give up your phone for a day’ – quite an achievement!

The total amount raised at the Learning Centre for Comic Relief was £155. A special mention has to go out to Sabiha who was our star fundraiser, accumulating a grand total of £95!! (the majority raised on her sponsored silence!) Well done Sabiha, a great effort for a worthy cause.

During today’s assembly, members of the Learning Centre Student Council fed back some of the key points of last week’s meeting. They will also be taking the lead on future actions which I look forward to sharing. Well done Bobby-Joe, Sophie, Nathan W. and Josh (who stepped in at the last minute)

The Student Council are also leading the way on suggestions for what to include on our Trilby TV. Here are just some of their ideas: safety videos, lots of students’ work, the blog, important messages for parents/students/staff, events, pictures and videos from Calvert, Medtia and Bridging the Gap. It is going to look fantastic!

It’s a very exciting (and a little nervous) time for our Year 13 students who are getting ready for next week’s Calvert residential. We left them with this advice – “Try absolutely everything and enjoy every minute!” If our previous visits to Calvert are anything to go by, they will have a great time and we can’t wait to hear all about it when they get back. Here’s a little reminder of last year’s trip (although thankfully ‘the Beast from the East’ shouldn’t be making an appearance this year!!)..

On Thursday we supported World Down’s Syndrome Day by wearing odd colourful socks and held a quiz in assembly to guess the owners!! The gingerbread socks from our local Down’s Syndrome charity proved very popular and we will update you on the full amount raised next week.

Have a great weekend,

Dawn
