We have had some lovely feedback about our first blog entry and the children were keen to tell us that they had logged on at home to share their progress with their families and friends. I think it’s great that a wider circle of people in Oldham gain an insight into the work we do here at Spring Brook and the fantastic progress that the children make.
Well, where to start? Miss Foxcroft teaches in Class 5 and her 6 boys have been extremely busy. Here are a couple of their highlights…
As part of our DT (Design and Technology) topic ‘Teddy Bears Picnic’ one of their tasks was to design and make a healthy skewer that we could take on a picnic. They had all designed fruit skewers using a range of fruits such as water melon, mango, blueberries, raspberries, kiwi and oranges. The pupils learned how to prepare their skewers hygienically and safely and I’m sure you’ll agree they looked delicious!
In Literacy, Class 5 also went on a Gruffalo reading comprehension treasure hunt around school. They found ten clues around school that needed to be solved. The clues tested their comprehension and rhyming skills. Class 5 all managed to solve the clues and all received a certificate at the end to show how well they did..
In Maths, the boys have been supporting each other while they learn about number bonds (which numbers make 10, 20 etc…) Here you can see them using a fantastic resource called Numicon which helps them to see how the numbers fit together. Some excellent teamwork going on here, well done Class 5!
On Monday, we were lucky enough to join other schools at Oldham College’s Futsal Arena to practise our skills on Scooters, Skateboards and In-Line Skates. This was a session designed to give an opportunity for those who don’t always get involved in ‘sporty’ things and the pupils represented the school very well indeed. Class 6 have had a very busy week too. They had been reading traditional tales and have loved dressing up to re-enact the stories. Kobi and Luke make a lovely Knight and Princess!
They have also been reading about a Superhero called Supertato – he wrote to them asking for their help so they have been designing their own superheroes and deciding what their own super powers would be. Exciting stuff! They have also designed, made and tested their own capes..

Do you remember last week I told you that Class 1 had been in the Forest School making dens? Well, here is the reason – this week in DT they have been experimenting with different bridge designs. They are using their knowledge of shape and angles to design structures that will support different weights. They worked brilliantly together in small teams as you can see..
In assembly, I was very happy to share some of the work Class 2 have completed during their Spies and Gadgets topic. They have designed gadgets that a Spy would use and then used persuasive language to write adverts, design posters and finally make a video pitch to persuade others to buy their inventions. They have also written some particularly persuasive CV’s to apply for the role of a Spy – I wouldn’t want to mess with some of them, that’s for sure! On Thursday, I met with some colleagues to find out more and plan activities for holiday clubs going forward. The New Bridge Group works tirelessly to provide a range of exciting and fun activities for children to take part in over the holidays throughout the year. The charge for this is only £5 per day which is superb value. During the February half-term, we have invited a small number of children to take part on just two days so we can find out how it runs and from the Easter Holidays, we hope to be able to open it up to every child at Spring Brook. I will keep you up to date with the details and appreciate the feedback from any families taking part in next week’s trial run!
Friday saw a very sporting end to the week. Firstly, we were able to collect two rowing machines that will live in school for the next two weeks. This is an activity that we have done before and we set them a challenge of how far we need to row. Last time, we rowed the 113 miles to Caernarfon in Wales which is where we take our Year 6 pupils on holiday. That was in just one week, so this year, we are trying to complete a 218 mile journey from school to Buckingham Palace in London!! It’s a tough ask, but I have every confidence in them and we made a great start with 15 miles on the first day. Everybody gets involved, adults too, and I have to say our staff are a competitive bunch when racing against the children – there is no such thing as giving them a chance!! Finally, on Friday afternoon we made our second venture into the world of Cross Country Running. 13 of our children headed off to Stoneleigh Park and were supported by many parents too which was lovely. They all tried very hard indeed and particular mentions go to Abu who came in 5th place in the Year 4 race..
..and Alex who came 11th in the Year 6 race..
Both of these are competitive categories. Well done to everybody who took part..
