Themed learning for our young people is always inspirational and is a wonderful way to put their key learning goals into context. This week our IB groups have been exploring World War II, as we discovered when an enticing smell drew us into a classroom only to find a portion of Woolton Pie, clothes from the forties, ration books, a selection of ‘grow your own’ vegetables and many other objects of reference from that period in history. We’ve obviously set a very high standard with our blog….if you haven’t seen it yet, please have a look at our first ever Head Boy’s blog here. We are so proud of Matthew and his commitment to New Bridge, and now he has really impressed us with the first class content, pace and flow of narrative in his blog – well done!!
As usual, our youngsters have been keeping fit and healthy but this week has seen another first – our own ‘dodgeball derby’ here at Hollinwood. Tuesday saw our football team taking part in the latest round of Manchester City’s Disability Football League. Staying with City, as we mentioned a few weeks ago, Paul Kelly, Manchester City’s Disability co-ordinator, has been coming in and delivering lessons at New Bridge. Our Activ8 pathway have spent the last few Fridays working alongside Paul, assisting the PE staff with our Year 9 PE lessons and practising their Sports Leaders skills..
Paul has been so impressed that he has invited the group to lead at a Manchester City disability football event at Manchester Central on Monday – we can’t wait to tell you how it goes!
As you know, at the Learning Centre we aim to help our students develop even further the life and social skills they require to become as independent as possible and, where appropriate, to succeed in further education placements or in the world of work, often through our ‘Bridging the Gap’ programme.
Our Enterprise programme plays a crucial part in enabling our students to gain a range of social and work based skills that they will need for the future. The Enterprise programme incorporates finance, including profit and loss, money management, sales and marketing, product design, customer care and teamwork. Students are currently working hard designing and preparing items for a ‘Valentines Sale’. Gift wrapped glasses filled with chocolates, badges, fridge magnets, compact mirrors and charms will all be on sale at the Learning Centre from Wednesday 3rd February until we break up for half term on Friday 12th. Please support our students’ endeavours and take advantage of the beautiful range available when choosing your Valentine gifts..
We may have to keep a beady eye open for ‘Hitch’, our resident crow, when the Enterprise Group put their work on display though – there have been whispers that he may have become partial to our cutlery (and we always thought it was magpies who like shiny objects!)
